Mental health in youth is at a crisis level. Bullying, anxiety, depression, and suicide are on the rise. Reports show that 160,000 students are missing school EVERY DAY due to fear of being bullied. 85% of bullied children have no intervention and are forced to deal with the bullying by themselves.
Martial arts have long been recognized for building character and discipline. Jiu-jitsu has added bonuses:
Reason #1: Practical. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a practical form of self-defense focused on escapes and holds. No kicking or striking means less likelihood of brain injury. Children who are being bullied will learn to hold and control their attacker until an adult can be summoned. A smaller child armed with jiu-jitsu techniques can easily hold their own with a larger, stronger classmate.
Reason #2: Engages the brain. Jiu-jitsu is a game of physical chess, where you are always calculating your next move in response to your opponent.
Reason #3: Builds interpersonal communication skills. No phones or earbuds, kids are interacting with the coach and each other, playing games and learning new physical skills.
Reason #4: Discipline. Kids come to classes consistently to learn weekly techniques and prepare for advancement and competition, earning stripes towards belt advancements.
Reason #5: Making new friends. Having a friend and network of support can mean the difference between life and death. Knowing you have a team of like-minded people on your side provides a great sense of security and confidence. Shy, introverted people have found a sense of calm and place to belong.
Reason #6: Helps with mental health: physical contact with other people, sense of belonging, goal setting and sense of accomplishment, confidence from learning and executing new skills.

We model and practice responses to bullies to de-escalate anger and train for proper responses when physical safety is threatened. Armed with the knowledge and confidence of how to act and react in different situations, kids feel less anxiety and fear. Most long term jiu-jitsu players are humble and carry themselves in a way that commands respect and honor.
