The school years are a critical time when parents must allow their children to fail—to experience disappointment and frustration that occur when life gives us lemons. By learning to fail, how to cope with disappointment and try again (while the stakes are low), kids can grow up to become self-assured, resilient, competent, self-reliant and successful adults. But what if parents today weren’t allowing their children to have these experiences? In modern parenting we hear terms like “snowplow parenting,” “helicopter parenting,” and “bulldozer parenting”—forms of parenting all laced with overprotectiveness. These are parents who are constantly checking their children’s grades, rushing to the school to hand in forgotten kid’s assignments, calling teachers about scores on tests, masterminding children’s friendships and interfering on the sports field to, in fact, level the playing field. These children are having their lives choreographed and thus not having the opportunity to fail—or solve their own problems and learn from their mistakes. These skills are important to growing up and becoming a successful adult- so, how can we learn to embrace failure and teach our children to do so too?
Intrinsic motivation comes down to 3 things: Fostering kids’ autonomy, helping kids feel competent (confidence based on experience) and connection with us as the key adults in their lives.
Are you able to check off the box at night that says; “I was a good parent today?” This is not about what you did to make you feel good but what was actually helpful to your kid in the long run. (Listen to the story about her son leaving his homework at home by mistake!)
Ask yourself; what will you want your kids to be able to do in a year?
Talk out YOUR mistakes and how we deal with them. Ask your kids for strategies.
Model, think long term and realize that if we’ve been good parents, the kids aren’t going to need us anymore—they will feel more competent in the long term.
Stop parenting for emergencies!
Allow your children to have some control. Kids who don’t feel like they have control, they tend to lie more.
Start talking about the process rather than the product.
